Traits are what define the basic attributes and, oftentimes, a special action that your character can use. Traits have a direct influence on the overall strengths of your character and are the key to adapting your character to your play style. Traits are permanent and cannot be revised once set initially.
Each character is allowed a total of four traits. Some races some pre-selected with 1, 2, or 3 traits, while the player can select the remaining ones. Only the fully custom races have completely blank trait settings. Predefined races, however, also have a limited selection is which traits may be chosen during customization.
Players should consider which role they wish to play in the game before selecting a combination of race and traits. Some races are better at certain roles than others. For example, Klingons would be horrible healers, because they automatically start with an increase Threat generation trait.
While nearly the same space and ground traits are available to both Federation and Klingon characters with a few race restrictions, some individual race traits are unique. For example, the Klingon Honorable trait increases threat generation by 10% and boosts damage resistance by 5%, which comes in handy for tanking and is not available for any of the Federation races.
Note: Bridge officers also have traits. The bridge officers seem to have four of them, each of which follows the same race requirements as player character traits. It appears they can only have ground based traits (confirmation needed). They may have traits not available to player characters (confirmation needed). Rarer bridge officers can have traits that include a "Superior" modifier.
Customizable traits are extra traits which the player is required to choose to make a total of four traits. The following is a list of customizable traits that are available to players, although all these traits might not be available for their chosen race.
