Over the course of a characters career in Star Trek Online they will earn skill points. Skill points are directly related to your current rank and are required to be earned and spent if the player wishes their character to receive a promotion. They are comparable to "experience" used in other MMORPGs however unlike experience they are not automatically assigned and the player must do it manually by spending the points on their skills.
Cryptic has stated that players will be allowed to reset their spent points and allowed to redistribute them as they see fit however the system is not implemented yet. In MMORPGs this practice is commonly known as respecing or a respec. The official word as to when it will be implemented is "soon".
Skill points are player-only points that advance your character and ship. They can also affect your bridge officers however affect them as whole rather than individually like the bridge officer points do. Skill points are acquired by completing missions in both PvE and PvP. They can also be accrued more slowly by killing players and NPCs of the opposite faction.
These points must be gathered in bulk before they can be spent. At Ensign, Warrior and Lieutenant levels your skills cost 100 skill points to be able to go up one level, to a maximum of nine. For example, if a player earns 32 skill points for completing a mission and they have zero points to begin with, then they will need to earn another 68 points before they can improve on their skills. This base value of 100 increases with rank and not all ranks skills cost 100 points to improve.
The skills window for both player skill points and bridge officer points are viewable and spendable in game by pressing the K key on the keyboard.
When a player reaches the skill point cap any rewards that were personal skill points are automatically converted into bridge officer skill points by the game.
